Simple Paper Mache Mask-making

9/28/24 UPDATE: The interest in this class has been amazing! At this time we are only able to accommodate 6 people per session in our indoor teaching area, and we already have 3 additional people on the waiting list. Our apologies to those unable to take the class this year. But we will be offering this class again in the Spring, Summer and Fall 2025. Follow our instagram at https://www.instagram.com/wildlandroots/ for updates about upcoming classes, or contact classes@goblinart.com if you would like an email update sent directly to you. Thank you!

This class teaches students to create a unique wearable mask using a streamlined paper mache mask-making method.

It is taught by by professional mask-maker and Wildland Roots Artistic Director Moni J. Sears, and is based on a technique taught by Bruce Marrs at the Dell Arte School of Physical Theatre in the late 1990s.

During the morning session, participants build a custom mask base with aluminum foil, tape and cardboard over a face form, then apply a single layer of paper mache inside and out using a biodegradable paste. The masks are then set in the sun or in front of a fan to dry over the lunch break.

Immediately after lunch, participants reinforce their mask edges with wire, trim out eye holes and apply final paper mache detail. We then take a break while the paper mache dries.

In the final afternoon session, students paint their masks and add ties and other embellishments.

Location: The Wildland Roots community workspace is at #2 Troll Alley, at the far end of Green Anchors. Allow extra time to find your way there from the main gate. You can follow the wooden signs for Troll Alley, or use this detailed map through the Green Anchors property.

Parking: Please park on the street outside the Green Anchors entrance, or in the Cathedral Park Boat Ramp parking lot.

Parking if you have accessibility needs:
(1) Drive through the Green Anchors main gate
(2) Take the first turn on your right
(3) Where the driveway splits take the left side
(4) Drive all the way to the workshops at back of the property to where it looks like the driveway ends (5) Take the last possible left turn and drive down the hill, then park on the north side of the pier classroom space immediately next to the last shipping container.
Since onsite parking is limited, please make sure to request accessibility parking ahead of time so we can ensure there is space for you.
