Lantern Making with Paper and Willow

Make a beautiful, pyramid-shaped paper lantern using locally harvested willow branches. This method is based on traditional willow lantern-making techniques from the United Kingdom, but is adapted to use materials easily found in the United States. We will also look at examples of more elaborate willow lantern-design that have been made using the same basic construction method.

In the first part of the class, students will craft the structure of their lantern from cured and re-hydrated willow branches and tape. In the second half of the class, students will use paper mache techniques with translucent paper and biodegradable glue to cover and finish their lantern.

Class taught by Wildland Roots Artistic Director Moni J. Sears.
